Missa "Fortuna Desperata " Dutch Edition Jacob Obrecht 9781141199464 Books
An amazing display of expressivity achieved through daring 'prolations' and 'colorations'! There are at least half a dozen parody masses based on the chanson Fortuna Desperata, but Obrecht's is by far the most likely to keep the most secular audiences riveted to the music. This edition, however, is hopelessly out of date. published first in the 1920s I believe. The prolations are not rendered intelligible to any singers or conductors who are steeped in HIPP lore. The ficta are bizarre. You'd need to re-edit thoroughly to produce performance-worthy parts for singers.
I'm reviewing it now for an extraneous reason, that is, to 'plug' the recording of this mass and Obrecht's also-splendid Missa Rose playsante by the Vienna ensemble called "The Sound and the Fury" -- david Erler, Klaus wenk, John Potter, Thomas Bauer, and Ricahrd Wistreich -- on the ORF Label. The 2-CD release is titled "Jacob Obrecht 1 - paradise regained." That 1 makes me hope S&F is planning a series of Obrecht recordings. In thsi performance, they do everything right: the prolations, the mean-tone tuning, the profound basso tessitura, the total rhetorical independence of the lines of polyphony. I would hasten to rank The Sound and the Fury among the top five vocal ensembles dedicated to Renaissance polyphony that I've ever heard. They have also cut superb CDs of Ockeghem and Faugues, but to my astonishment their releases are not available on amazon. com !!! They are listed on amazon. de (Germany) but the shipping cost is a bit steep.
The best other available recordings of Obrecht's masses are 1) Missa de Santo Donatiano sung by Cappella Pratensis, 2)Missa sub tuum praesidium sung by The Clerks' Group, 3) Missa Malheur me bat sung by The Clerks' Group. After those, the quality falls off steeply. Avoid the ANS Chorus recordings as assiduously as a Tea Party rally!
